IRB Sevens Tournament - San Diego

Jonny Dub and I headed down to Petco Park to see the IRB Sevens Rugby tournament.  Neither of us know anything about Rugby but we were willing to learn and enjoy.

Rugby Sevens is a bit different from regular Rugby.  First there are only seven players on the field instead of the normal 15.  The best part is that the games are much shorter.  The games only last about 20 minutes and they are crazy fun to watch.

One of the first things I noticed when approaching Petco Park was something that Sign on San Diego noticed as well:

"It's like a brotherhood," one usher said. "A big fraternity."

Except I was thinking of the beer chugging, faux hawking, collar popping, hair gelling, puka shell wearing frat boys.  It's been awhile since I attended a frat party but all of the clear signs were there.  Rugby fans might just be the frat boys of the rest of the world.

Below is an interesting video of the Padres head grounds crew guy Luke Yoder talking about the conversion of the baseball field to a rugby field.
