how does this actually work?

does someone actually show up at their house and take back their medals? Or are the books just changed and the new winners get their new medals?

for the record, i would not give my medal back

I'd request a new medal made

I wouldn’t want someone else’s medal, especially if they cheated.

new medals I would think

aren’t they generally engraved on the back with the event and your name? Would kind of necessitate making new ones. Though I would suggest they also want the old ones back so they don’t end up on the black market.

Blame my wife!

a quick google suggests they are retrieved

What happens to the medals

In accordance with IOC policy, it is up to the national Olympic committee of the athlete in question to retrieve the medals.

You could also

just start running really fast. They’d never catch you.
